The author has a great ability to create vivid pictures in the readers mind. Character development is exceptional. The emotions that the book brings to the forefront are both exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. A reader feels the pain felt by the grandmother at the lose of her dream of having a close knit family but it is also a book of hope for the future of the family seen through the eyes if the granddaughter. This book does not only chronicle the history of one family but in many ways brings some understanding to the situation that immigrant families face in the new world in which they have chosen to live. In many ways the pioneers of Western Canada were immigrants, and face much of the same problems of modern day immigrants, even though they may have moved from another part of Canada where their families may have lived for hundreds of years. Having lived through the death of a culture, this book accurately portrays the pain that is associated with the world of the survivors. This story of cultural death is told against a backdrop of sexual abuse making this a must read. I highly recommend reading "Becoming Sand" by L. G. Pomerleau.Product details

Such a beautiful sweeping story filled with heartbreaking reality. You won't be able to put it down! I eagerly await the next novel from LG Pomerleau.
