As an agile coach with years of experience and much reading, I am refreshed to finally find something so unique and insightful on the topic of Scrum. Tobias has captured what Scrum is really like, from the trenches so to speak. In publishing this book, I feel Tobias was courageous enough to call out what others have been unable to see or just afraid to say in the wider scrum community. I am grateful not only for the insights, but for the public display of courage.You’ve read the Cohn series of scrum books. You’ve applied all the cookie cutter methods – story points, planning poker, modified Fibonacci sequence, Scrum of Scrums, burn down charts, team agreements, definition of ready, meta- scrum etc. etc. and something still doesn’t fit. If this is you, then you are likely to be ready for this book and possibly also ready to call yourself an agile anarchist.
This is now my number one favourite book on Scrum.

The People's Scrum is an informative and thought provoking book. The book is a series of essays from Tobias Mayer's blogs. The essays force you to take a look at your practice of Scrum and compare it to the original goals of Scrum.
In many organizations, the practice of Scrum has become a prescriptive process layered with bureaucracy. It has become the antithesis of Scrum's original purpose. Instead of setting a group of self-organizing, self-managing developers free to create great software, it has shackled them to a stiff rule laden process that is called "Scrum" but is not Scrum.
Read Tobias Mayer's essays and compare them to your practice of Scrum. Does your practice of Scrum support the ideals of Scrum or has it become a burdensome heavyweight process forced onto teams?
I have been reading Tobias' blog for a few years now and these essays are exactly how I perceive and experience Tobias. He is good for the Agile and Scrum community and these essays are good for the Agile and Scrum community.
I spent more time reading his story than the essays though. If you are interested in the life story of a bold and sometimes "too bold for his own good" Agilist ...then go for it. I would highly recommend this book and his story and his essays.
If you are looking to bring in some energy into your dull and boring agile transformation effort, then go for it. You may need it.
If you are doing great then give this book a skip for now. Come back when your creativity needs a refresh.
Tobias is genius in writing this awesome book in a way that you really have to switch your thoughts about Scrum. After reading it, the book has reinvigorated my professional passion with Scrum. I love acting as a ScrumMaster and Agile/Lean Coach, and Tobias answered some questions that I can make better. His work cuts right to the core. I am very excited to write this review, because Tobias really deserves it. Every ScrumMaster, Product Owner, manager, developer, and so on, must read it. It's very cheap and brings to us another step in our journey of transforming an organization into Agile. Scrum is a framework that really works, embrace it, follow it and you'll never go back to your old concepts. Thank you so much, Tobias Mayer.
A quick warning first This book shouldn't be your introduction to Scrum. It doesn't explain any basics or how to get started. There are plenty other books about that and honestly if you're looking to get into Scrum, a workshop might fill your needs much better anyways.
Now that out of the way, this is by far the best book I read so far to improve my work as a Scrum Master. It takes the basics points of Scrum, twists them around, digs right to the core and spits them out again. Finally an author who doesn't just repeat the works of Sutherland and Schwaber, but scrutinizes every artifact and meeting in the process. Here's someone who obviously worked with Scrum, encountered many problems (...which are surprisingly often the same that I ran into) and offers his hindsight to these issues.
Now the book doesn't offer exact solutions to the problems that can arise while working with Scrum, but instead looks into what is actually causing these problems. To me this was way more helpful than all the other books I ever read. If you work with people, problems that arise can be complex and can't be just "solved". However, if you understand why these problems arise and what can cause them, you can eventually find a way to tackle the issues. And to me, that is essentially what a Scrum Master should do.
It's obvious that Tobias really and truly believes that Scrum not only works, but is at it's core the best way to develop software and with this book he helps to bring it to a whole new level. I would even go as far as to call it Scrum 2.0. Even though it's obvious that Tobias would hate this random, superficial term. )
Tobias is the Red Team of Scrum and Agile (yes Tobias, I use a capital A). He is heavily biased in his writing toward the Human side of business and software development, for which I cannot fault him. However, his life experiences and natural predilection for revolution also creep into his writing, wholly unchecked. His positions are very provocative, as they tend to be when one writes from a purely emotional platform and doesn't take time to introspect. He forces his introspection onto the reader, instead. This book is a must-read, however, for anyone seriously interested in not just the "how" but also the "why" of Agile and Scrum.
Tobias is one of the leading voices in practical Agile. His ideas are clear, coherent and focused on helping you improve the way you work.
You don't go to Tobias for hard and fast rules or processes, as you can find him explaining in various speeches available online. You go to Tobias to figure out what you don't know, what you're not paying attention to and to open yourself to modifying how you THINK about the work, before trying to apply Agile principles to the REALITY of your work.
Even if you're working within a Taylorist environment, you will find this book a lever to either adapting what you can,--or finding a better place to work. Go for it!!
